Makeup Artist Cataline Hotin Creates Graphic 3D Looks — See Photos
It’s not every day that we do a double-take while scrolling through Instagram, but we couldn’t help it when we came across Cătălina Hotin’s makeup looks on our feed, as they’re truly next-level works of art. What makes her creations so unique is the fact that most of them have an undeniable 3D quality to them, almost like they’re jumping out of the screen at you. Turns out, Hotin uses a combination of face paint and eyeliner to achieve this mesmerizing effect. And as far as where she sources her inspiration from, the answer is everywhere.
“Most of the time, I don’t have a particular idea in mind and I’ll just do the first thing that pops into my head and build on top of that. But other times, I’ll scroll through Instagram and Pinterest because I get really inspired by different artwork,” Hotin tells Allure. “I also get really excited by colors, shapes, and other makeup looks — the internet is such an amazing resource, and I think it’s so important to surround yourself with genuine creators that you admire.”
Speaking of which, one of her most recent graphic makeup looks (pictured below) is actually a recreation of an illustration done by the artist Ketnipz, whose unique style has earned them almost two million followers on Instagram. “For this look, I wanted to make a funny comparison between the makeup I post and how I can actually feel on the inside,” Hotin explains. “It’s good to laugh at yourself, and I find Instagram to be a great escape… Whenever I go outside and forget that I am wearing one of my colorful looks, I usually catch some people staring at me, so the ‘please no’ message is pretty much what I think of while also trying not to laugh,” she adds.
If you want to recreate one of Hotin’s works — or experiment with a bold look of your own — you can easily get a similar effect with colored liquid eyeliner, such as Stila Stay All Day Waterpoof Liquid Eyeliner or Diorshow On Stage Liquid Eyeliner, as they both have quite a few fun color options to choose from. Alternatively, you could follow in Hotin’s footsteps and use face paint. Her go-to brand is Snazaroo.
A word of advice from Hotin for anyone who might feel hesitant to step out of their comfort zone: “I know self-expression can sometimes make others feel uncomfortable, but I wish everyone would stop being intimidated by color and just embrace it. Once you do, it’s the best feeling.”
